Project Description
What shapes our attitudes? Why are some people such great leaders? What leads us to like one person and dislike another? How do conflicts and prejudices develop, and how can they be reduced? These are just a few of the questions examined in the field of social psychology. This course looks at a wide range of social topics, including group behavior, social perception, leadership, nonverbal behavior, conformity, aggression, decision making, prejudice, and factors that promote health and well-being.

Our focus will be on surprising, entertaining, and intriguing concepts and research findings that are useful and applicable in our daily lives. Exercises and assignments in class and in home study will encourage you to experiment with your life, observe the results, and analyze what took place.
Teaching Method
The learning format is primarily research at home and in class using computers.
Small group work and discussions often leading to investigation.
Active participation in exercises and psychology tests
Analysis of films
Development of presentations
Some lecture
Primarily, the students are presented with psychology topics that they investigate and present to one another in various styles and formats. The lecturer serves as a facilitator and questioner. It is an active learning format.
Learning Results
Students will be able to:
Describe basic elements in the field of social psychology by examining theories, principles, and concepts.
Understand how social psychology theories, principles, and concepts may be applied to real-life situations.
Recognize how living in his/her social world affects other people's thoughts, feelings, and actions and how their actions and behaviors affect others.
Literature
Readings in Aronson's, "The Social Animal"
Readings and/or viewing of Zimbardo's, "The Lucifer Effect"

Assessment Methods
Assessment tasks:
Part A: 30%
Students will be expected to read articles, watch films, and do independent research (find articles, film clips, etc.) and be ready to discuss and present on these assignments in class. Because of class size, not every student will be able to present in each class. Presenters of weekly assignments will be chosen at random at each class.

Part B: 40%
Students will keep a journal for reflection and ideas on the course, it's topics, and it's relevance to their lives. Weekly entries will have themes to consider, questions to answer, topics for analysis and self-reflection.
The journals will be handed in twice during the semester, and will be collected at the end.

Part B: 30%
Students must participate in all activities and presentations in the classes they attend. This will often require preparation at home.

Project Description
Childrens' books, captions, lecture performances, … We encounter the interplay of texts and images in many contexts, in our daily life, at work or in the arts. They mutually influence each other, shaping their respective meaning and creating a new narrative.
We will playfully explore a variety of collaborations of words and pictures. Through a series of short practical exercises you will look into ways of producing and using texts and images. You will work with photography, but not exclusively. Additionally, artists using text and works in their practice will be presented.
After this warm-up you will be embarking on individual projects. Using different approaches, you might work with your own words and images as well as using existing texts and pictures, creating your own narratives.
The workshop results in a public display of the individual projects, be it as a live event, a publication or an exhibition - depending on the participants' chosen media.
Teaching Method
  • Practical exercises, individually and in groups
  • Short individual presentations
