Studying and Working

Many students work alongside their studies, especially during the semester break.

How much you can work depends on your personal situation, your study model and your residence status in Liechtenstein. Our Student Advisory Service is here to support you with any questions related to this topic.

Degree programmes at the University of Liechtenstein are primarily designed as full-time programmes. To complete your studies within the standard programme length (six semesters for a bachelor's degree, four for a master's), you should plan to spend an average of around 40 hours per week during the lecture period.

Especially at the beginning of a bachelor’s degree, a part-time job can become a burden. A low-hour job may be possible, but it should be carefully considered.

Whether and how much you can work alongside your studies depends strongly on your individual situation. How well can you organise yourself? What are the demands of your degree programme? What is your financial situation?

What works for others may not necessarily be right for you. A part-time job can provide valuable practical experience. However, if it takes up too much of your time, it may result in extended study duration, lower academic performance or burnout.

If you are planning to work while studying, think early on about how it fits with your other commitments and make sure to manage your time wisely.

Part-time study is a flexible study model that any student can choose to fit their personal life situation. This can be a good solution if you are working a significant number of hours alongside your studies or have family responsibilities. You take fewer modules per semester than outlined in the curriculum and complete your degree over a longer period of time.

At the University of Liechtenstein, all degree programmes can in principle be completed on a part-time basis. It is not a separate study track but a flexible way to organise your studies. There is no need to register separately. You are free to adjust your study workload from one semester to the next.

It is important to stay within the maximum duration of study. For bachelor's programmes, this is 14 semesters. For master's programmes, it is 10 semesters. You are also required to complete at least 20 ECTS credits per academic year, which represents the minimum academic workload.

Part-time study gives you the freedom to combine your studies with other aspects of your life. You can begin with a reduced workload and increase your pace later, or do the reverse.

If you are a student at the University of Liechtenstein and live in Liechtenstein with a residence permit, you are permitted to work up to 35% during the lecture period. During semester breaks, full-time employment is allowed.

Before starting any job, you must obtain prior authorisation from the Migration and Passport Office of Liechtenstein. Your employer is required to submit a formal request for employment approval (Stellenantrittsgesuch). You may only begin working once official approval has been granted.

Make sure the request is submitted on time. If it is filed late, a fine of up to CHF 400 may apply.

If you have any questions about employment permission, please contact the Migration and Passport Office of Liechtenstein directly.
