The Most Important Bodies and Committees

The organisational structure of the University of Liechtenstein is based on the University of Liechtenstein Act, the Statute and the Organisational Regulations. Together, they form the legal foundation for the management and organisation of the University. The individual organisational units are presented below (as of 31 December 2024).

The University Council is the highest governing body of the University of Liechtenstein. It is appointed by the government for a term of four years and consists of five to seven members from academia and business. The Rector of the University of Liechtenstein and a representative of the Office of Education participate in the meetings in an advisory capacity. In addition, all members of the Rectorate are permanent participants.

Legal assistance and Secretary to the University Council

The Senate deals with the academic development of the university and is in particular responsible for the following tasks: approval of curricula as well as study and examination regulations; appointment of academic committees; issuing opinions on questions of strategy, research governance and quality in research and teaching; and initiating further development and quality assurance measures in research and teaching.

 

The Senate consists of all professors as well as nine representatives of the mid-level faculty, six representatives of the student body and three members of the university administration. The Rector participates in Senate meetings in an advisory capacity.

 

The Senate elects a professor as its chair every three years.

The Rectorate is responsible in particular for the operational management of the University of Liechtenstein, external representation and the initiation and coordination of planning measures. The Rectorate is appointed by the University Council and is composed of the following members:

Since 1 January 2023, the University of Liechtenstein has been structured into three subject-related and two teaching-related schools. The subject-related schools are responsible for research and services in their academic fields as well as for providing teaching and professional education offerings. In matters of academic development and in operational areas such as marketing and student management, the subject-related schools are supported by the teaching-related schools.

Deans

The Professorial Council, as a functional body of the University of Liechtenstein, carries out the tasks assigned to it in university self-governance (Art. 23 para. 4 of the Statutes of the University of Liechtenstein) and represents the interests of its members.

 

The Professorial Council consists of all full professors as well as associate professors of the University of Liechtenstein. Its organisation, structure and responsibilities are set out in the Rules of Procedure.

 

The Professorial Council elects from among its members a chair and a deputy chair for a term of three years. Currently, these are:

The Academic Staff Council, as a functional body of the University of Liechtenstein, carries out the tasks assigned to it in university self-governance (Art. 34 para. 2 of the new Statutes of the University of Liechtenstein) and represents the interests of its members. The Academic Staff Council includes all substitute professors, assistant professors, senior lecturers and senior scientists, as well as all academic and artistic staff and research assistants at the University of Liechtenstein.

 

The organisation, structure and responsibilities of the Academic Staff Council are set out in its Rules of Procedure.

 

Every two years, Academic Staff Council elects a board at a general assembly to represent its interests. The board in turn elects a president and a vice president for a term of two years. Currently, these are:

  • Marco Lettenbichler (President, member of the Disciplinary Committee)
  • Johannes Herburger (Vice President)

 

In addition, the Academic Staff Council sends representatives to the Senate (Art. 27 para. 1), the Disciplinary Committee (Art. 35 para. 1) and the Appointment Advisory Boards (Art. 33 para. 3).

The University of Liechtenstein ensures compliance with national and international standards through its quality management. This comprises a quality strategy, binding guidelines and a systematic quality assurance system.
