Project Description
Games have long been used as powerful training instruments. They help create working models of human interaction, which enable students to acquire and apply new knowledge and skills. They are especially useful for sensitive topics as they engage players emotionally in the low-risk environment created by an artificial field of play.
The Game "New Horizons" (Crawford, 2016, S. 1) is based on the concept of "Diversophy" (S. 2) and engages intercultural and social interaction through a specific card game.
The game empowers those who play it to work and communicate constructively across differences. The game takes players from "ethnocentricity" (S. 2) - being centered in one's own culture, the way we find ourselves when we first face diversity - to "diversophy" (S. 2), a state of higher cultural sensitivity and skill. These skills will be transferred to and enrich students`work and private life.
Teaching Method
Lecture, games, discussion, presentation, group work, self reflection.
Learning Objectives
On their path to improved cultural competence, students, through actively creating and playing this game, facilitate interaction and dialogue through game play, with the overall goal of increasing awareness, understanding and empathy in intercultural situations.
A: Self competence:
  • comprehension and awareness in intercultural situations
  • empathy for a diverse society
  • tolerance for ambiguity

B. Professional expertise: students know and apply the basic theories for intercultural communication
C. Methods competence:
  • Reproduction of intercultural competences
  • challenge students´factual knowledge about specific cultural topics
  • enhance communication and teambuilding skills
  • put students in situations that are beyond their control. Some situations are "positive" (+) and some "negative" (-). These situations allow students to experience, in a non-threatening way, how differences can create unexpected benefits or costs
  • experience knowledge from different cultures and recommendations that encourage students to look for opportunities to apply it in their work or life.

D. Social competence: Application of intercultural competences in regional settings

Project Description
When we talk about communication, we usually assume that it is oral or written communication. It is often forgotten that there is also communication in non-verbal form. Posture or facial expressions usually complement or underline the spoken word. In this module students will research how it is possible to complete a narrative through their own body perception. Is it possible to tell a story or give a speech without words? Can a person appear more present or attract more attention through a certain posture? Are there differences in mood or tension when someone tells a story in different places in the same room? These and many other questions related to non-verbal communication will be explored in this workshop through practical exercises.
Teaching Method
- Practical theatre exercises
- conversations/discussions about the exercises
- Presentation of scenes and exercises rehearsed during class to the other students of the class
Learning Objectives
- introduction to work as actor/artist in theatre and on stage
- Increasing the perception of one's own body
- Sharpening of the senses for the environment/the space
- Basic knowledge for dealing with non-verbal communication
- Telling a short story/having a short speech without using spoken words in front of an audience
- development of a consciousness acting/speeking for an audience
Course Materials
- the students are requested to come to class in comfortable clothes and shoes (tracksuits, t-shirt, light sneakers or thick socks)
- writing material (for an individual workshop-diary)
  • Please bring a camping mat.

Project Description
The relationships between migration and various aspects of democracy are manifold: How do democracies integrate their emigrants and immigrants (e. g. foreigners' right to vote, access to citizenship, dual citizenship, etc. )? On the other side, how do migrants contribute to their host societies? How do democracies change through migration? These and other questions regarding the relationship between migration and democracy will be explored.
The module will be conducted as a workshop. In small groups an exhibition concept will be developed - in terms of content and graphics. At the end of the workshop the outcome of every group will be discussed. It is envisaged that the contents developed can then be exhibited publicly.

Project Description

Mai 2020
Teaching Method
Schreibprojekt, Schreibwerkstatt
