60th After-Work Lecture: Generating Alpha in Emerging Markets

60th After-Work Lecture: Generating Alpha in Emerging Markets

School or Professorship:
The CFA After-Work Lectures are a series of lectures on current developments in Asset and Investment Management. Exchange of ideas amongst professionals of Corporations, Banks, Asset Management, Investment and Insurance Companies, Financial Advisory Services, Tax Administration, Lawyers, Trustees, Fund Managers and Financial Auditors.

In this After-Work Lecture, Hiren Dasani, CIO Emerging Markets at WhiteOak Capital, will build a bridge between rigorous fundamentals and real-world alpha generation in one of the most inefficient parts of global equities. Drawing on two decades of on-the-ground EM investing, he will show why outperformance in emerging markets is less about macro timing and more about disciplined stock selection, governance-aware research, and intrinsic value underwriting. The talk will unpack how investors can separate genuine compounders from "headline winners" using a cash-flow and returns lens (including WhiteOak's OpcoFinco framework) to identify mispricing and avoid classic EM pitfalls. Expect a practical, process-driven session on how to turn complexity, volatility, and information gaps into an enduring edge - relevant for students and investment professionals alike.
