Project Description
As a short introduction to philosophy, this seminar takes up mainly four issues:
- The nature of philosophy: what is philosophy? What are its objects of investigation? What are its methods? What makes philosophy relevant?
- The nature of morality: how should we live? Why do we need ethics?
- The nature of art: What is art? What is an artwork? How do we evaluate artworks? Are moral standards relevant for art?
- The nature of knowledge and critical thinking: how can we know something? How can we formulate logical and coherent positions? What is critical thinking and how can we train it?

This seminar will be an opportunity to introduce and discuss major philosophical positions and theories in the areas of ethics, aesthetics, epistemology, and critical thinking. Using practical examples from concrete life-situations, we'll establish the link between theory and practice and show the relevance of philosophy.

Project Description
  • Whether in business, management, society, or politics, it seems at times that we are surrounded by battle lines, waging price wars, detecting threats, forming alliances, and aiming to conquer the market.
  • However, destructive interaction wastes resources and only yields losers in the end. Diplomats can show the way down different path. With clear messages, elegant expression, and consideration for the 'human factor', they understand how to advocate their views, to break deadlock in negotiations, to take the sting out of bad news, and to focus on human crisis management when relationships hang in the balance.
  • In this course you learn how to uphold legitimate concerns in a way that can also benefit the other party, allowing people to save face if concessions have to be made. The business world is a marketplace where negotiations for the common good should always be fair and on equal terms, even if they are extremely difficult and often harsh.
  • 'Trust' as a key instrument in diplomatic leadership competence and essential pillar, particularly in difficult times
  • Tips and tricks of the trade
Teaching Method
Methodological mix of input, plenary discussions in class, reflection, group work, role play
Learning Results
Participants are able to …
  • advance their own positions
  • subtly and sympathetically package difficult messages
  • use winning strategies for communication during challenging situations
  • assert their interests in negotiations with diplomatic tact, in a complex environment with many different stakeholders, yet letting the other save face
  • achieve goals with diplomacy and diplomatic communication
  • navigate elegantly among different stakeholders
