The module Electives Design Theory I seeks to establish complementary knowledge and integrative understanding for the concentration Design Theory. The students choose 4 courses from 6 possible courses.

The aim is to provide students with the complementary professional knowledge and intellectual instruments to approach the problems discussed in the design project studios.

At the end of the module each student should have the ability to demonstrate and/or work with:

• Present and evaluate arguments, information and ideas concerning the discipline.
• An understanding of professional vocabulary and concepts.
• Confidence in analysing case studies of urban structures and the ability to infer principles and motivations.

The module Design Theory I seeks to establish the theoretical and professional frame to an integrated, intellectual and specific architectural debate and project making within the concentration Design Theory.
The topics center on issues to develop critical positions towards subjective reasoning in architecture and to further the ability to root these positions in the history and theory of architecture, as well as in the political, sociological, and cultural context of contemporary architecture and society. Theoretical planning and architectural articulation of space considering notions such as typology, morphology and style are fundamental topics in architectural education.

The compact projects are set to complement skills and knowledge acquired in the project studios and to broaden the horizon of the students.

The aim of the module is to provide students with the necessary architectural tools and intellectual instruments and avareness to integrate the knowledge aquired in the Courses Design Theory I into a responsible and sustainable professional behaviour.

At the end of the module each student should have the ability to demonstrate and/or work with:

• A researched understanding of design in order to take a position as a designer reflected in the ability to devise and implement strategies
• A critical understanding of the intellectual and aesthetic content of self-selected buildings that supports architectural judgement.

The topics for the first semester center on issues regarding the theoretical planning and construction of space proper considering notions such as typology, morphology and style; the discussion of the historical emergence of the concept of 'architectural' space as a product of social constructivist processes, considering the impact of ideological, political, and ecomical forces; an introduction to the fundamental aspects of processes of perception that enable occupants of architectural spaces to mentally construct a representation of these spaces.

• Architektonischer Entwurf mit konkreter Aufgabenstellung im Kontext: Begriff des Ortes, des direkten Umfeldes eines Bauwerks, Mehrgeschossigkeit und komplexere Nutzungszusammenhänge in überschaubarem Rahmen, Vertiefung von Teilaspekten innerhalb des Projektes mit integrierten Experten aus dem Modulen Bautechnik oder Theorie.

" Einführung in das parametrisierte Entwerfen mit dem Computer: Interaktion von Entwurf, Applikation und der CNC-Fräse als Werkzeug, Anwendungsorientiertes Herstellen von prototypischen Verbindungen, Knoten und Strukturen.
" Entwerfen von infrastrukturellen Bauwerken im Bereich Verkehr, Tourismus im kleineren Massstab: Miteinbezug des urbanen oder suburbanen Wachstumsproblematik, Prozessorientierte Vorgehensweise in der Anlalyse der Aufgabe und der Entwicklung von zukunftsweisenden Konzepten.

Projektunterricht im Atelier mit Inputvorlesungen, Exkursionen, Gruppenarbeiten, Einzelgesprächen.

Aufbauend auf den Modulen Entwurf I und II werden die Grundlagen für das weitere Studium des architektonischen Entwerfens vertieft. Einerseits steht die fortgesetzte Ausbildung der Entwurfsmethodik im architektonischen Entwerfen und Konstruieren mit dem sukzessiven Einbezug von Grundlagen und Anforderungen aus anderen Disziplinen im Vodergrund. Andererseits werden Teilgebiete des architektonischen Entwerfens wie etwa der Entwurf von Infrastrukturen unter dem Einbezug von urbanen, soziologischen und gestalterischen Aufgaben oder das Entwerfen von digitalen Produktionsprozessen als Grundlage für eine konkrete Anwendung und Produktion von Bauteilen kultiviert. Darüber hinaus wird in kompakter Form das prozesshafte Erarbeiten von Kenntnissen und Fähigkeiten in einem erweiterten entwerferischen Themenbereich angeeignet.

Die Studierenden

• verfügen über verbreiterte Kenntnisse der Architektur und des architektonischen Entwerfens und von spezifischen verwandten Disziplinen.
• verfügen über ein Basiswissen des computerbasierten architektonischen Entwerfens und beherrschen grundlegende Regeln des Entwickelns von maschinellen Prozessen.
• verstehen die Probleme von urbanen Gebieten an der Nahtstelle von Mobilität und Architektur.
• denken und argumentieren auf verschiedenen konzeptionelle Ebenen und können eine engagierte Diskussion der Architektur führen.
• sind befähigt, ihren Entwurfsprozess mit einer Palette von Medien sowie mit Hilfe des Computers und mittels einer prozessorientierten Modellbautechnik aufzubauen und klar verständlich im Bezug zur Aufgabenstellung darzulegen.
• können die gestellten Aufgaben selbständig erarbeiten und individuell umsetzen.
• vermögen die Komplexität ihrer Projektarbeit am Computer, in Planform und Modell sowie in Sprache und Schrift verständlich zu kommunizieren.

Die Prüfung der Lernergebnisse erfolgt separat in den einzelnen Lehrveranstaltungen (Zwischen- und Schlusskritiken mit externen Kritikern).

Entwurf 3.0 mit Integraler Planung 100%

• Einführung in den architektonischen Entwurfsprozess mit experimentellen Ansätzen: Entdecken architektonischer Grundprinzipien wie Raum, Licht, Material, Proportionen, Massstäblichkeit, Projektaufbau mit konzeptionellen Anfängen bis zum Abschluss mit einem Kleinprojekt.
• Einführung in das konstruktive Entwerfen mit stark materiellem Bezug: Herausschälen tektonischer Themen aus dem Material, gleichzeitiges Arbeiten an Detail und Gesamten, Herstellen von körpernahen Gehäusen bis hin zu Kleinstgebäuden.
• Vermittlung von wechselnden Inhalte, die ergänzend zum Unterricht in den Entwurfsprojekten stehen, durch Gastdozenten aus einem internationalen Kontext.
• Auseinanderzusetzung mit aktuellen Fragen aus der Architekturpraxis und dem laufenden Architekturdiskurs in einem theoretischen Kontext in der Vortragsreihe.

Im Modul Entwurf I sollen die ersten Grundlagen für das weitere Studium des architektonischen Entwerfens gelegt werden. Im Zentrum steht der Einblick in die Methodik des architektonischen und des konstruktiven Entwerfens, das Erforschen des Wahrnehmungs- und Gestaltungsvermögens und das Untersuchen der Eigenschaften von Materialien und entsprechenden Einsatzmöglichkeiten. Darüber hinaus wird in kompakter Form das prozesshafte Erarbeiten von Kenntnissen und Fähigkeiten in einem erweiterten entwerferischen Themenbereich angeeignet.

Die Studierenden

• Students develop methods and approaches indicating how to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical context
• Students collaborate as members of project groups and work towards the solution of given problems

The Internship / practical training periods are to be carried out in architectural firms under supervision of professional staff of the office.

The module Internship / practical training seeks to allow students to gain deeper insights and practical training in relevant areas of professional practice. The module shall enable students to further their theoretical knowledge, corresponding to their educational level, with practical work in an architectural firm, covering various aspects and parts of projects. The complexity of the projects and the students' contributions shall correspond to the students' educational levels in the MSc Degree-Program.

At the end of the module each student should have the ability to demonstrate and/or work with:

• The fundamental knowledge of practical implementation of theoretical approaches in architecture
• An understanding of the complexity of translating design intentions into physical buildings or urban situations
• The ability to work as members of interdisciplinary teams in architectural firms and to work towards the solution of given problems under supervision
• The ability to communicate their work visually, orally and in written form
• An understanding and critical judgement of ideas, informations, and arguments as part of the discourse in the field of architecture and an ability to translate these issues into practice.

• A mandatory meeting with the school's PSA after being accepted for an internship.
• A presentation, with a written description and documentation to be graded by invited experts and the director of the MSc Degree-Program

The student has to submit written proof of the required 320 work hours and all mentione assessments hae to be passed with a sufficient grade (minimum grade of 4.0).
