Project Description
"Mindfulness means paying attention to what's happening in the present moment in the mind, body and external environment, with an attitude of curiosity and kindness." (The Mindfulness Initiative)

The MILSA mentoring program provides students with the opportunity to develop their intercultural awareness and intercultural learning as students and future professionals. The program is offered twice yearly with a duration of approx. twelve months. It starts in April respectively in October.
The mentoring program provides an immersive intercultural learning experience in an international location. Students' learning is supported by pre-departure and post-sojourn workshops, and by Skype interviews and guided blog writing during the study abroad. The mentor is lecturer of the University of Liechtenstein.
The pre-departure workshop introduces students to explore aspects of intercultural learning and helps them prepare for their experience in a different society and culture.
During the stay abroad, students will talk to the mentor via Skype and write guided blog contributions about their intercultural learning. They stay in contact and complete group task together. Upon their return, students meet with the mentor in a post-sojourn workshop to discuss and reflect upon their experiences and the importance of their intercultural learning for their future professional lives.
The subject includes content on notions of culture, interculturality, intercultural learning,
stereotypes, identities, cultural practices, and reflection and reflective writing.
The First Steps in Intercultural Learning Workshop is held before students depart. This workshop provides essential content, discussion and activities to prepare students for their intercultural learning, international experience and to guide their completion of assessment tasks.
The Coming Home Workshop takes place after students return from their stay abroad and allows them to reflect on their experience, particularly their intercultural learning and its
application to their future professional lives. Students also present their group assignment.

Project Description

Project Description
This module is a cross-faculty elective course of all PhD programmes of the University of Liechtenstein. It is a joint course, involving students from different schools, in order to broaden the students` horizon beyond their individual disciplinary focus and to enable them to reflect and discuss their own work from the perspective of different disciplines.
The course is organized in form of a Doctoral Consortium, in which participants present their research and discuss it with the faculty and fellow PhD students of the course. The primary objective of the research colloquium is to present and justify the PhD students' research in an interdisciplinary research colloquium.
Assessment by the professors enables candidates to appraise if their research ideas meet the requirements and goals of a dissertation. Since the research colloquium is mentored by an interdisciplinary academic committee, this module also serves to further develop the communicative and social competences of the students.
Students receive feedback on their research by faculty members of different faculties. Moreover, they benefit from listening to the other students' experiences and results. As a research colloquium the module aims at deepening both, methodological and professional research skills of the students. In addition, the module is designed to position and reflect their work in academic research communities beyond their own fields.
The interdisciplinary nature of the course is an important element to enable the students to engage with other in making contributions of value to society. We understand that such solutions do not come from single disciplines but live on the interdisciplinary discourse, which requires both methodological as well as conceptual and social skills, which are delivered in this course.
Students benefit from listening to the other students' experiences and debating results with a focus on the specific disciplines, styles of inquiry, and learning cultures at the University of Liechtenstein. Key elements include the problematization, research question, relevant theoretical lenses and conceptual frameworks, specific strategies of inquiry, and measures to comply with the respective research standards.
This module addresses the researcher's ability to manage projects, work autonomously, think analytically, and be creative, inquisitive, and original.

Project Description
Human rights play a central role in world affairs. As moral, legal, and political norms and standards, human rights are meant to protect individuals' and groups' fundamental rights and freedoms. Yet, human rights are constantly contested not only as a concept, but also as guidelines to address practical issues. Hence, this lecture, "Philosophy of Human Rights", is divided into two main parts:
In the first part, we'll be looking into the following philosophical questions about human rights:
- What are human rights? What are their foundations? How do human rights relate to the individual, society, and world order?
In the second part, we'll be investigating four topics in which the exercise of human rights faces complex challenges:
- Human rights and culture: are human rights "universal"? Can/should human rights comply with specific cultural demands?
- Human rights and freedom of movement: how to understand the right to freedom of movement in the context of immigration debates and the recent Covid-crisis?
- Human rights and business: Should multinational enterprises comply with human rights?
- Human rights and security: in contexts like terrorism, many states chose security at the expenses of freedom and privacy. How to justify such decisions, especially in light of the right to security?
Although this course will focus on the philosophical aspects of human rights, it will also try to shed light on the interconnections between philosophy, law and politics.
