Reference Module Design for Explorative Business Process Management

Project Description

This project investigates the notion of explorative BPM. This is motivated by recent calls to systematically integrate innovation opportunities into business process work. Whereas existing BPM tools predominantly focus on the exploitation of improvement opportunities within processes and/or the organization, explorative BPM takes an "outside-in" perspective to re-design new processes in response to opportunities in the external environment. Such opportunities may arise from emerging business as well as technology trends. The project pursues the overall goal to design and implement a curriculum that enables the realization of explorative BPM. In doing so, it is concerned with the development and implementation of a method that integrates techniques from innovation management. The project is a collaboration between the University of Liechtenstein, the University of Bayreuth and the Vienna University of Economics and Business.

The development of guiding principles in spatial planning (raumplanerische Leitbilder) in the Greater Zurich Area

Project Description

Guiding principles in spatial planning (raumplanerische Leitbilder) are a noncommittal instrument in spatial planning that achieves its effect by the persuasion and consensus-building in a discussion process. They act as a mediator between government ministries, authorities and other stakeholders like the public.
The research project deals with the development of guiding principles in spatial planning (raumplanerische Leitbilder) in the Greater Zurich Area since the 22nd of 1979 June, when the Article 4 of the Federal Law on Spatial Planning (Eidgenössischen Raumplanungsgesetz) 'information and participation of the population' (Information und Mitwirkung der Bevölkerung) entered into force.
Based on selected case studies in the Greater Zurich Area the various functions, usages and ways of mediation of guiding principles in spatial planning are studied and analysed. For that the four phases of a development process (idea generation, elaboration, stabilization, reorientation) are examined.
Initial investigations show that the production of guiding principles in
spatial planning (raumplanerische Leitbilder) in the in the Greater Zurich Area has grown steadily in the last decades. As one of Europe's fastest-growing regions the the Greater Zurich Area will have an expected population growth of 250,000 inhabitants and an increase in traffic of 20% by 2030. This implies an increasing pressure on land use and suggests the development of more guiding principles in spatial planning (raumplanerische Leitbilder).
The aim of the investigation is to gain knowledge that contributes to a better understanding of the planning tools - guiding principles in spatial planning (raumplanerische Leitbilder) - at the interface with the public.

Relevance to Liechtenstein

Raumplanerische Leitbilder sind ein nicht bindendes Instrument in Planungsverfahren, das seine Wirkung durch Überzeugungskraft und Konsensbildung im Diskussionsprozess erreicht. Ziel der Untersuchung ist eine bewusstere Auseinandersetzung mit dem Planungsinstrument Leitbild. Der Erkenntnisgewinn über die Entstehung und Funktion von raumplanerischen Leitbilder am Beispiel Metropolitanraum Zürich soll einen Beitrag zur Entwicklung zukünftiger Planungsverfahren an der Schnittstelle zur Öffentlichkeit in anderen benachbarten Regionen, wie das Fürstentum Liechtenstein, leisten.

Quantitative Investment Management and Portfolio Optimisation

Project Description

Overall, the proposed dissertation project aims to contribute to academic literature by identifying research gaps in the field of quantitative investment management and answering the respective by applying state of the art methods. In this respect, the first two papers are particularly concerned with the reduction of estimation errors of expected returns and covariance's. Subsequently, the third paper takes a slightly different turn by questioning the general assumption of domestic investment being free of exchange rate exposure. This is of particular relevance with respect to the on-going discussion on international diversification and hedging strategies. Finally, paper four wraps up by taking a closer look at delegated portfolio management and moral hazard issues associated with it. In this context, the author introduces the well-known Black-Litterman approach as a potential solution to the common principal-agent problem and, thereby, provides an alternative to costly monitoring processes commonly adopted in practice. Consequently, the expected results of the planned dissertation project will also yield valuable insights for practitioners.

Qualifizierung von Stadtlandschaften? Aktor-Netzwerke und die Grenzen der Planung

Project Description

Die Erkenntnis "The city as sociotechnical Process" (Graham et al 2001) ist Ausgangspunkt des Promotionsvorhabens. Es vertieft diese Leseart mit Fokus auf spezifisch zwischenstädtische Ereignisse und testet bekannte Zwischenstadt-Planungsstrategien auf Misskonzeptionen und Potentiale.

Dazu ist es notwendig im ersten Teil der Arbeit, die "Black Box" Planung genauer zu betrachten, verschiedene raumrelevante Akteure zu beschreiben, sowie deren komplexen Verknüpfungen untereinander zu rekonstruieren. Gleichzeitig sollen die Rollen der Planer im Planungs- und Rückübersetzungsprozess beschrieben werden.

In einem zweiten Teil der Arbeit werden viel diskutierte Planungsansätze auf ein Teilgebiet des Alpenrheintales übertragen. So werden der aktuellen Raumplanung räumlich qualifizierende Strategien, wie im "Handbuch zum Stadtrand" (Lampugnani et al 2007), in "After-Sprawl" (Geyter 2002) oder in "Zwischen Stadt Entwerfen" (Bormann et al 2005) beschrieben, gegenübergestellt und diskutiert.

Das gewählte Forschungskonzept folgt dabei dem Ansatz einer "lokalen städtebaulichen Praxis" (Eisinger 2004, S. 12), mit welcher es Eisinger in seiner Habilitationsschrift gelang, Städtebautheorie und Städtebaupraxis in einen gesellschaftstheoretischen Kontext zu stellen. Dabei orientierte er sich an den Vorgehensweisen der Science and Technology Studies (STS) insbesondere den Forschungsansätzen der Aktor-Netzwerk-Theorie (ANT). Mit diesem Konzept der "lokalen städtebaulichen Praxis" lassen sich die spezifisch lokalen Gegebenheiten dechiffrieren, die dazu Verhelfen ein besseres Verständnis für die gesellschaftlichen Prozesse im Bezug zur Raumproduktion typischen Stadtlandschaften zu entwickeln.

Psychological aspects of entrepreneurship - How personality and cognitive abilities influence leadership

Psychological testing is widely used in personal assessments for all hierarchy level and industries. In my Ph.D. thesis, I would like to investigate which additional benefit the application of valid scales and tests from organizational and differential psychology can add to predict entrepreneurial success of applicants. This research will be based on a comprehensive literature review of entrepreneurial traits and the identification of relevant variables for entrepreneurial success on individual basis. By focusing on some key abilities (e.g., creativity, dominance) and the selection of adequate and valid psychological scales and tests differences between entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs can be identified and relationships between individual traits and organizational success can be described.

Efficiency improvements in corporate processes are crucial for sustainable and environmentally conscious use of available resources, so that future generations can also benefit. While many studies highlight the importance of product innovations, there are few that investigate the direct relationship between process innovation and company performance. The main goal of the research project is to identify the extent to which process innovations, leading to efficiency gains, have a positive effect on company performance. In the research project, efficiency gains are quantified through a Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The resulting process efficiency is expected to explain part of the company's growth and future performance. Various DEA models will be identified, developed, and tested for measuring process innovation. The project aims to build on previous research, particularly by Hörler and Brecht (2023), to develop practice-relevant applications for the economic landscape of Liechtenstein. The research project makes a significant contribution to science by extending DEA-based efficiency measurement to process innovations. It aims to demonstrate the extent to which efficiency gains can improve company performance and identifies patterns that distinguish efficient from less efficient companies. For the efficient companies, Best Practice Cases can subsequently be derived.

The local financial industry can measure the performance of companies through the analysis of process efficiency and innovation activities with modern DEA indicator models, allowing fund and asset managers to use these insights for their financial products. Focusing on a European sample and the long-term perspective over two decades increases the local relevance and strategic depth of the research, which is particularly relevant for teaching at the University of Liechtenstein and the financial industry in Liechtenstein.

The research project makes a significant contribution to science by extending DEA-based efficiency measurement to process innovations. For the efficient companies, Best Practice Cases can subsequently be derived. Likewise, these findings are important for economic enterprises as they reveal new performance indicators for companies, which is of great significance for Liechtenstein as a financial center.
