Managing enterprise content in business processes

Project Description

The dissertation explores contemporary issues that arise during the implementation of ECM. The dissertation is paper-based (PhD by publication), and each paper addresses a selected set of ECM issues. The studies that constitute this dissertation are methodologically qualitative or design-oriented. Theoretically, the dissertation investigates the concept of ECM through a business process lens because the creation and use of content are deeply embedded in organizational business processes, and the implementation of ECM systems provides organizations with new opportunities for supporting content-related process activities.

Relevance to Liechtenstein

The dissertation deals with a topic of high regional relevance. Several companies from Liechtenstein, including Hilti, Hoval, Ivoclar Vivadent, and ThyssenKrupp Presta, as well as the Public Administration in Liechtenstein, serve as the case study partners.

Managing Cooperation and Competition in the Digital Era

Project Description

The business environment of the 21st century is characterized by increasing uncertainties and more rapid, unpredictable changes, primarily triggered by ongoing globalization and digitization. In this regard, it can be observed that more and more IT firms, as well as young, small and innovative players, so-called start-ups, are disruptively transforming traditional industries with their novel products and services and are winning market shares from incumbents. These developments pose a particular threat for larger companies, which, due to their historically grown structures, cannot adapt quickly enough to changing market conditions. Therefore, an increasing number of large companies consider collaborating with firms that have high digital literacy to increase their innovation potential and thereby transform their business model to the new conditions to remain competitive. In contrast to traditional models of cooperation, such as customer-supplier relationships, this type of cooperation not only contains cooperative but also competitive elements. Thus, this research project aims to investigate how such partnerships with (potential) competitors have to be designed and managed to be beneficial for all involved parties.

Sustainable access and parking in mixed-use residential areas in the case of Hochschule Liechtenstein

Project Description

Relevance to Liechtenstein

Scientific, Economic and Societal Impact

Management of content-intensive business processes

Project Description

Organizations are increasingly challenged with the growing digitization of organizational documents and content. In particular, the management of unstructured information is frequently difficult for companies. In research and practice these and similar challenges are discussed under the term Enterprise Content Management (ECM). However, only few scientific studies exist on ECM so far and in particular, a process-oriented perspective on ECM has not been taken yet. Furthermore, research in BPM has not discussed the management of content in sufficient depth. The relevance of business processes for the management of content - and vice versa - becomes, however, already obvious in the ECM definition of the AIIM: "the strategies, methods and tools used to capture, manage, store, preserve, and deliver content and documents related to organizational processes. ECM tools and strategies allow the management of an organization's unstructured information, wherever that information exists". In recent articles the need for an integration of ECM and BPM has already been confirmed. Therefore, this study wants to research the impact of content on business processes and how content-intensive business processes can be managed appropriately.

Management Buyouts in Family Businesses - Change in Structure, Strategy and Culture and the Effects on Strategic Orientation

Project Description

Management BuyOuts (MBOs) of family businesses are an alternative solution to the problem of succession. A MBO is the sale of a company to the incumbent management. It offers an opportunity to maintain the company's autonomy and continuity, especially in family firms. Having a closely associated manager continue to run the company strengthens the chances of retaining the company's culture and ethos - an important aspect for family businesses.

Nonetheless, MBOs often entail a period of change. They are phases of uncertainty which at the same time open up new options. Research has shown that MBOs have led to revitalization and strategic innovation in corporations. Hence MBOs may can clear the way for growth and renewal for family firms as well without them losing their special strengths; the resources which have been built up through the years (common language, goals and values). At present there has been no studies made into this interplay of strategic renewal and tradition as a consequence of succession MBOs.

This paper examines the changes in family businesses when they are converted into management-run companies and the effects of these changes on strategic orientation. It studies the changes in structure, strategy and culture, the cause-and-effect relationships between the changes in these variables and the post-buyout positioning of the company. Considering in particular the perspective of the buying-in management, the intention is to identify the levers which enable a successful and sustainable orientation post-buyout.

High-Quality Machine Learning solution to translate spoken German dialect into Official German ("Hochdeutsch")

Project Description

As part of the research work, a solution based on machine learning and NLP - natural language processing - should be developed that can automatically translate spoken German dialect into Official German. This solution should be able to carry out proven translations with very high quality; the aim is to subsequently obtain certification as a trustworthy AI to allow it to be used in critical environments. The first step of the research work is about finding, analysing and evaluating suitable training data followed by finding, analysing and evaluating suitable models. In addition to identifying the best algorithms and models, it is also necessary to develop criteria and methods for evaluating the training data and the translation results. Only with the appropriate evaluations the quality of the training data and the finished solution can be objectively proven.

Liechtenstein Trust Law in a European and International Context

Project Description

Originating in common law, trusts are foreign to continental European jurisdictions. In practice, Liechtenstein's position is counter-cyclical to the international trend: the trust is gaining in importance worldwide, but declining in use in Liechtenstein. This is attributable to legal uncertainty, because trust law is isolated within the Liechtenstein legal system. Since trusts are foreign to continental Europe, countries with practical experience must be examined. The project aims at reviewing sources in typical trust law jurisdictions of practical relevance to the Liechtenstein market. Thus, laying the foundation for a knowledge pool in respect of trust law specifically tailored to Liechtenstein's requirements.

Relevance to Liechtenstein

The project aims at reviewing legal sources in typical trust law jurisdictions, in order to gain relevant insights for Liechtenstein trust law. This will lay a foundation for building a knowledge pool in respect of trust law specifically tailored to Liechtenstein's requirements.
