Project Description

Der Bodensee Geschäftsklimaindex BGKI ergänzt die nationalen Geschäftsklimaindizes um eine internationale, grenzüberschreitende Perspektive.

Der Bodensee Geschäftsklimaindex BGKI.net ist der konjunkturelle Stimmungsindikator für die internationale Bodenseeregion. Er basiert auf einer regelmässigen Online-Umfrage unter Unternehmen, in der Daten zur aktuellen und prognostizierten wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung gewonnen werden. Diese können in Verbindung mit einer Auswertung den EntscheidungsträgerInnen in Wirtschaft und Politik wichtige Zusatzinformationen liefern und einen Input für die Bearbeitung regionalökonomischer Fragestellungen bilden.

Mittels der IBH-Förderung konnte die zweijährigen Pilotphase ausgeweitet werden, um zu einer repräsentativen Erweiterung der teilnehmenden Unternehmen sowie zu einer Vernetzung mit weiteren Projektpartnern zu gelangen. Studierenden verschiedener Hochschularten erlangen Praxiserfahrung im Umgang mit Befragungs- und Datenanalysemethoden.

Bodensee 2030

Project Description

The development of the Lake Constance region is led by a variety of different actors, institutions and strategies. Common to all these is that they pursue predominantly short to medium term planning horizons and are trapped in the division of labor policies. However, the general trends such as demographic changes, climate change and others do not stop at the Lake Constance. To be prepared for their long-term effects on the development of the region, the aim of the project is a regional Foresight study.
Due to the contribution of broadly common future images, the strategic intelligence in the region should be supported and effect a greater coherence in the on going decisions. The thematic focus is on ensuring an innovative economic development. For this purpose participation approaches for key development trends are identified, further discussed for their significance, and most recently by deriving concrete recommendations for action make them workable for the region.

The consortium consists of University St. Gallen = project leader, of University of Liechtenstein, University Constance and of Zeppelin University Friedrichshafen.

Relevance to Liechtenstein

Da negative Entwicklungen wie demografischer Wandel und Klimaveränderungen vor Liechtensteiner Grenzen nicht halt machen, betreffen sie die ganze Region Bodensee. Ziel des Projekts ist durch breit getragene gemeinsame Zukunftsbilder zur Verbesserung der strategischen Intelligenz in der Region beizutragen und eine innovative Wirtschaftsentwicklung sicherzustellen. Neben einer regionalen Foresightstudie werden die Ergebnisse in konkreten Handlungsempfehlungen aufgezeigt werden.

Bibliometric analysis on the EU Taxonomy

Project Description

The European Union Taxonomy Regulation, adopted in 2020, plays a crucial role in promoting sustainable investments and supporting the transition to a greener economy. As a comprehensive framework, it provides a standardized classification system for environmentally sustainable eco-nomic activities. The goal of the EU Taxonomy is to combat greenwashing, enhance transparency, and assist investors and businesses in selecting sustainable options.
This project aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the current literature on the EU Taxonomy Regulation to gain insights into the scholarly landscape, identify trends, and evaluate the impact of this regulation on research and academic discourse.

Relevance to Liechtenstein

The results of the bibliometric analysis provide valuable insights into how the EU taxonomy is actually implemented in the context of sustainable finance. This information can be used by the Government of Liechtenstein to make informed decisions to promote sustainable investments and implement environmental goals.
Furthermore, the Principality of Liechtenstein can use the findings on current trends and developments in relation to the EU taxonomy from the research project to increase its competitiveness in the area of sustainable finance. This can help establish Liechtenstein as a preferred location for companies and investors looking for environmentally friendly investment opportunities.
The research project will help promote awareness of sustainable finance and environmental protection in Liechtenstein. By disseminating research results, the University of Liechtenstein can support educational and information initiatives that raise awareness among the country's citizens about the importance of sustainable financial practices.
Liechtenstein can position itself as a pioneer in innovative approaches to promote sustainability and responsible investment. This could help the country gain international recognition as a leading player in sustainable finance and environmental protection.

Beyond the Biennale

Project Description

Since its beginnings the International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale (short: Biennale) has become an influential protagonist within international architectural debates, due to its ability to draw the most renowned and high profile tendencies to Venice. Not only is the Architecture Biennale a place for cultural translation and trans?national encounters but also a testing ground for technical innovation (spatial, material) and a platform for research and education. It has become a site of experimentation and innovation defining new ways of architectural production. It can be seen as 'a place between' art and architecture in the public realm or what Jane Rendell (2006) calls a 'critical spatial practice' based on Lefebvre's 'spatial practice' (1991) where the concerns lie on the processes, rather than on the objects, providing a tool for social change and self?reflection. In recent years there has been a thorough analysis and documentation, through articles, interviews and images and books of the activities and contributions of the participating pavilions, providing an overall idea of the curatorial concepts, the spaces and events. Less material can be found about the collective memory of a posteriori effects of Biennale activities (vgl. Levy and Menking, 2010;
Ricci, 2010; O'Neill, 2012). Therefore, this project aims to fill the gap by asking the following questions:
  • Cultural policies (political): what are the institutional models and goals of organising a biennale participation and how are they evaluated a posteriori? (keywords: policies, strategies, funding)
  • Cultural industry (economic): what influence do Biennale contributions have on the emergence of cultural economic values/challenges, both in the public as well as the private sector? (keywords: collaborative creativity, value?chains, networks).

Cultural institutions are increasingly being asked to articulate and justify their activities by evaluating and outlining the creation of added value. To achieve positive effects of cultural work in the political context of cultural and educational policies requires a goal? and impact?oriented planning with different partners. Documenting the effects and the use of the gained knowledge for the steering and planning of future projects as well as for the reasoning for future funding seems increasingly important.
The goal of the research project 'Beyond the Biennale' is to analyse, through mapping, literature review and interviews, the 'a posteriori' activities of Biennale?entries in order to outline the effects they have created. The comparative study will focus on the creation of a collective memory of three past winning participators; Korea (2014), Spain (2016) and Switzerland (2018).
The work is not meant to be an evaluation of cultural practice (De Perrot and Wodiunig, 2008; Ermert, 2008) but a record of emerging side?effects in the context of participating countries at the Architecture Biennale.
The findings want to contribute on one hand to the discourse about architecture exhibitions (academia) and on the other hand give a comprehensive insight to stakeholders of cultural and political institutions involved in Biennale activities.

Contribution to the development of a thermal comfort model using artificial neural networks to predict thermal sensation

An essential role in sustainable building planning plays the so-called thermal comfort of humans. The exploration of first comfort or human models has its origins in aerospace engineering and found its way into the building sector in the 1970s. The first standardised model is based on investigations in closed, thermally uniform rooms. In recent years, more unconditioned and personalised ventilation measures have become more important again, as both the energy efficiency of buildings and the individual thermal comfort could be improved. Various physiological models have been developed in recent decades to illustrate the associated effects, but there is still a lack of reliable derivation or prediction of the thermal sensation. In this dissertation, a model will be developed on the basis of a physiological-thermal human model and be using artificial neural networks to be able to make statements about the thermal perception of building users. The meaningful use of this numerical method requires a significant amount of different experimental data. For the choice of the input features as well as network architecture causal interactions of the human receptors and neural pathways should be considered.
