The aim of this module is to encourage students to reflect upon their dissertation project from different theoretical angles. The changing nature of technology, and concordant transformation of the social and organizational landscape means we continuously need both new tools, techniques, approaches, thinking and theories and to adapt existing ones to our particular situation. Hence, this module should provide the students with an overview on current theoretical approaches that fit with their research focus and have a solid basis for future research endeavours.

Das Essential-Modul untersucht die Rolle der Architekturtheorie für die Entstehung der gebauten Architektur. Für die Herausarbeitung inhaltlich zentraler Positionen werden Schlüsselbegriffe verwendet und anhand von Diskussionen und individuellen Analysen vertieft. So soll eine Aktivierung von theoretischen Zusammenhängen, politischen Strukturen und ökonomischen Bedingungen des Bauens entstehen.
Architektur kann nicht ausserhalb eines gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Systems gedacht werden. Ein Nach-denken über das Verhältnis von Architekturtheorie und Architekturgeschichte wird gefordert. Relevante archi-tekturtheoretische Begriffe werden analysiert und in einen kulturhistorischen Kontext eingebettet. Sedimen-tierte und aktuelle Themen, historische und neue Medien der Vermittlung, Analogien und Widersprüche zwi-schen disziplinarischen Theorien, Ideologien und Wissen, sowie auch Schnittstellen mit anderen Disziplinen (Bildende Kunst, Film, Soziologie, Philosophie, Wissenschaft) werden diskutiert und vertieft, um sie gleichzeitig mit mehreren Ebenen und Kenntnissen in Verbindung zu bringen.
Die Architektur wird somit als Teil des gesamten kulturellen Diskurses erlebbar. Die Architekturtheorien sind keine reinen Abstraktionen, sie bewegen sich zwischen absoluten Positionen, und relativen Verhältnissen. Das Modul dient der anwendungsorientierten Horizonterweiterung durch Vermittlung und Aneignung von Wissen. Dem Instrument der Vorlesungen (und Exkursionen) können Übungen im Selbststudium gegenüberstehen.

The essence of Upcycling consists of the recording, evaluation and qualitative development and upgrading of existing architecture and urban structures.
The history of building has always been the history of recycling and renewal. In times of structural changes material legacies can be found everywhere within areas of settlement. The use, rediscovery and qualitative development of the existing is no longer a question of ideology, but of resources, economy, spatial and constructive qualities of architecture and urban planning.

The module is designed to guide students in developing their scientific writing skills in particular, and critical thinking in general. Students learn how to make their scientific arguments clear and how to convey them convincingly in writing. They also gain insights into academic publishing and learn about different editorial and review processes. More importantly, the module prepares students to participate meaningfully in the global scientific discourse of their academic disciplines.

Die Teilnehmenden lernen die Grundbegriffe der Corporate Compliance sowie die Abgrenzung zur Corporate Governance kennen. Ebenso werden Compliance auf strategischer Ebene, die Organisation und das Weisungswesen der Compliance in einem Unternehmen diskutiert. Darüber hinaus wird Compliance aus dem Blickfeld der Betrugsprävention näher durchleuchtet. Des Weiteren stellen Compliance und Revision sowie die Cross-Border-Compliance und Risk Assessment und Reporting einen
