Studying without Barriers

Our aim is to remove barriers for students with disabilities or chronic illnesses and to eliminate disadvantages wherever they occur. All students should have unrestricted access to and the opportunity to participate fully in university life.

Our Services

The University of Liechtenstein is committed to providing accessible studies and supports students with health-related impairments in achieving their academic goals. Every condition and limitation is unique, which is why we offer individual solutions to ensure equal opportunities.

If you have any questions or specific concerns, our executive directors are always available to offer guidance. Together, we will find the best way to support you throughout your studies.

At the University of Liechtenstein, students with health-related impairments are given fair opportunities in examinations. Compensation for disadvantages is designed to offset individual limitations without conferring an unfair advantage. Each measure is carefully reviewed and individually adapted to the specific situation.

The application for compensation must be submitted to the executive directors no later than the registration deadline for examinations and must include all required supporting documents, such as a medical certificate. These documents should clearly describe the impact of the impairment to enable an appropriate decision.

Possible measures include extended writing time, changes to the examination format, the use of assistive tools, or taking the exam in a separate room. These accommodations are free of charge for students.

For more detailed information on compensation for disadvantages, please contact your executive directors. The legal basis can be found in Article 36, paragraph 2 of the Student Regulations.

The University of Liechtenstein supports students in successfully combining academic studies with elite sport. Our executive directors provide individual guidance in planning your studies and coordinate the application for “Elite Sport Status”. This status offers benefits such as flexible examination arrangements and adjustments to attendance requirements.

Person, die vor einem unscharfen Hintergrund einen blau-gelben Volleyball mit der Aufschrift „FIVB Approved“ hält.

The status is granted to students who can demonstrate athletic achievements of national or international relevance (e.g. membership in a national team or a development squad recognised by the Liechtenstein Olympic Committee, LOC).

A written application must be submitted no later than four weeks before the start of the semester. Required documents include proof of athletic performance (e.g. Swiss Olympic Card), a description of your sporting goals, and a training schedule.

The Liechtenstein Undergraduate and Graduate School reviews the submitted documents and makes the decision. The status is valid for one year and may be renewed.

To apply, you must submit a completed application form along with the relevant documentation. With “Elite Sport” status, you will benefit from a customised study structure—enabling you to successfully pursue your degree despite the demands of high-performance sport.

Planning to Move to Liechtenstein? Here is the Key Information for a Smooth Start

If you wish to move your place of residence to Liechtenstein for your studies, you will need a short-term residence permit. This is a mandatory requirement. For details and further information on the current legal regulations and the application procedure, please contact the Coordination Office for Residence Permits at: bewilligungen@uni.li.

Of course, EEA/EU citizens are free to take up residence in Switzerland or Austria instead. However, please note that we are unfortunately unable to provide support with administrative procedures or formalities in those countries.

Students from most third countries are required to obtain a visa to enter Liechtenstein. The University of Liechtenstein provides a guarantee in the form of a bank bond. In return, students must pay a deposit of CHF 3,000 to the University of Liechtenstein. This amount serves as a security and will only be refunded upon completion of the degree programme.

Studying and Working

Studying and Working

Viele Bücher offener Laptop Kaffeetasse viel Arbeit und Studium

Many students work alongside their studies, especially during the semester break.

How much you can work depends on your personal situation, your study model and your residence status in Liechtenstein. Our Student Advisory Service is here to support you with any questions related to this topic.

Viele Bücher offener Laptop Kaffeetasse viel Arbeit und Studium

Degree programmes at the University of Liechtenstein are primarily designed as full-time programmes. To complete your studies within the standard programme length (six semesters for a bachelor's degree, four for a master's), you should plan to spend an average of around 40 hours per week during the lecture period.

Especially at the beginning of a bachelor’s degree, a part-time job can become a burden. A low-hour job may be possible, but it should be carefully considered.

Whether and how much you can work alongside your studies depends strongly on your individual situation. How well can you organise yourself? What are the demands of your degree programme? What is your financial situation?

What works for others may not necessarily be right for you. A part-time job can provide valuable practical experience. However, if it takes up too much of your time, it may result in extended study duration, lower academic performance or burnout.

If you are planning to work while studying, think early on about how it fits with your other commitments and make sure to manage your time wisely.

Part-time study is a flexible study model that any student can choose to fit their personal life situation. This can be a good solution if you are working a significant number of hours alongside your studies or have family responsibilities. You take fewer modules per semester than outlined in the curriculum and complete your degree over a longer period of time.

At the University of Liechtenstein, all degree programmes can in principle be completed on a part-time basis. It is not a separate study track but a flexible way to organise your studies. There is no need to register separately. You are free to adjust your study workload from one semester to the next.

It is important to stay within the maximum duration of study. For bachelor's programmes, this is 14 semesters. For master's programmes, it is 10 semesters. You are also required to complete at least 20 ECTS credits per academic year, which represents the minimum academic workload.

Part-time study gives you the freedom to combine your studies with other aspects of your life. You can begin with a reduced workload and increase your pace later, or do the reverse.

If you are a student at the University of Liechtenstein and live in Liechtenstein with a residence permit, you are permitted to work up to 35% during the lecture period. During semester breaks, full-time employment is allowed.

Before starting any job, you must obtain prior authorisation from the Migration and Passport Office of Liechtenstein. Your employer is required to submit a formal request for employment approval (Stellenantrittsgesuch). You may only begin working once official approval has been granted.

Make sure the request is submitted on time. If it is filed late, a fine of up to CHF 400 may apply.

If you have any questions about employment permission, please contact the Migration and Passport Office of Liechtenstein directly.

Choosing Your Studies

Where and What to Study

Choosing a Degree Programme

Hand greift nach digitalen Büchern, die aus dem Bildschirm eines Laptops herausragen, symbolisiert digitale Bibliothek.

How do you find the right subject and the right higher education institution? If you do not want to rely solely on friends or your gut feeling, you will find helpful tips here on how to choose a degree programme and where and how to find information about studying.

Hand greift nach digitalen Büchern, die aus dem Bildschirm eines Laptops herausragen, symbolisiert digitale Bibliothek.
Choosing the right degree programme and a university that suits you will have a significant impact on your future and your overall satisfaction. These four steps will help you find the right subject and the right higher education institution.

The first step in choosing a subject is to identify your own interests, strengths and career goals. In addition to parents and schoolteachers, the academic and career advisory services offered by federal states and higher education institutions can provide support. There is also a wide range of information available online nowadays:

A great way to find out whether higher education is the right path for you, and if so, which subject area best matches your interests and skills, is to take an online test. Many of these are now freely available online. A good overview of online self-assessments in the German-speaking region is available here: https://www.osa-portal.de/ (only in German)

Once you have decided on a subject area, the next step is to find a suitable degree programme and a higher education institution that matches your needs. The internet is also a good starting point for this. You can find an overview of available degree programmes, for example, at:

You now know what you want to study and which universities or universities of applied sciences are potential options. The next step is to look into the details. Once you have selected a specific degree programme, it is important to find out not only about the content and structure of the programme, but also about its admission requirements.

  • Is my school-leaving qualification sufficient for admission?
  • Are there any special requirements, such as a minimum grade, relevant internships or aptitude tests?
  • What is the application deadline, how do I enrol, and what documents do I need?
  • How much will the programme cost?

At this stage, you should definitely get in touch with the student advisory service at the respective higher education institution.

All Information at a Glance

Tuition Fees

The tuition fees for bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programmes are as follows:

  • CHF 950 per semester for EU/EEA and Swiss nationals, as well as students who hold a permanent residence permit or a settlement permit in Liechtenstein, or a school-leaving certificate (Matura) from an EU/EEA country or Switzerland.
  • CHF 1,250 per semester for students from other countries who do not meet the above criteria.

A fixed amount of CHF 10 per semester from the tuition fees is earmarked specifically for services provided by the student union.

Other Fees

Services not covered by the tuition fees may be charged separately. This includes fees for administrative services, decisions, or the use of infrastructure.
Further information is available in the Implementation Provisions of the Fee Regulations

The expected monthly living expenses for students at the University of Liechtenstein amount to approx. CHF 1,500. However, living costs are highly individual and can vary significantly.

To give you a general idea of the monthly expenses, we have compiled a brief overview with approximate reference values:

Rent including utilities – approx. CHF 680

Telephone/mobile phone – approx. CHF 20

Food – approx. CHF 450

Health insurance – approx. CHF 100

Clothing, laundry, hygiene – approx. CHF 100

Leisure, pocket money – approx. CHF 150

Health Insurance

Anyone residing in Liechtenstein for more than three months is legally required to have health insurance. Students from EU countries who are insured under their national statutory health insurance scheme can apply for an exemption from this requirement by presenting a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a provisional replacement certificate. Both documents can be obtained from the health insurance provider in the student’s home country.
Please note that travel insurance from your home country cannot be accepted as valid health coverage.

If you come from a country with which Liechtenstein does not have a social security agreement, you must arrange your own health insurance either in your home country or in Liechtenstein. Upon request, we can provide you with a list of insurance providers in Liechtenstein.

Private Liability Insurance

This insurance covers damage you may cause to other people or their property. It also includes damage caused in your flat or room. A private liability insurance policy costs between CHF 85 and CHF 150 per year and typically offers coverage of up to CHF 5 million.
Although not mandatory, we strongly recommend that international students take out private liability insurance.

Working While Studying

It is generally possible to work alongside your studies at the University of Liechtenstein, especially during the semester breaks.
Further information is available here

Scholarships

Scholarships are generally awarded on the basis of academic merit. In addition to excellent academic performance, some foundations or scholarship providers may also consider factors such as political or social engagement, or other achievements. Scholarships are typically non-repayable.

All students at the University of Liechtenstein who reside in Liechtenstein are also eligible to apply to the Swiss Study Foundation.

Student Loans

Another way to finance your studies is through student loans. Various banks and government institutions offer suitable options.

For example, the Principality of Liechtenstein provides interest-free loans to students who have been residing in Liechtenstein for at least three years and who continue to have their main residence in the country.

State Support

In many cases, governments offer various forms of support for students.

Students from Germany, Austria and Switzerland are often eligible for national funding opportunities to support their studies in Liechtenstein.

In Germany, students may be entitled to BAföG under certain conditions, which can also be applied for when studying abroad.

Austrian students may benefit from grants such as the Studienbeihilfe (study grant) or the Selbsterhalterstipendium (self-support scholarship), both of which are granted regardless of the place of study.

In Switzerland, the cantons offer individual scholarships and loans, which are awarded based on the student’s personal situation.

For detailed information and applications, students should contact the relevant authorities or advisory offices in their home country. The Student Advisory Service at the University of Liechtenstein is also happy to assist.
