Welcome to the website of the Professorship for Innovative and Digital Finance at the University of Liechtenstein, currently led by Prof. Dr. Martin Angerer.

Our professorship is dedicated to researching and shaping new financial solutions. We explore opportunities and challenges arising from digitalisation, new technologies, and societal developments for the financial world. These insights are brought into teaching and practical exchange.

Our focus areas include blockchain, cryptocurrencies, FinTech, innovative financial products, impact finance and financial education. Our work is interdisciplinary, internationally collaborative, and characterised by a strong commitment to scientific relevance and societal benefit.

Person in Businesskleidung analysiert Finanzdiagramme auf Tablet.

Our teaching focuses on research-driven content, current developments, and practice-oriented applications. Courses are interactive and student-centred across Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD programmes, as well as in professional education.

Our teaching portfolio spans traditional topics such as financial markets, statistics, and academic writing, as well as crypto and innovative finance, FinTech, behavioural and experimental finance, and critical thinking. Through professional education programmes such as the CAS Blockchain and FinTech (supported by Bank Frick) and the Innovative Finance Workshop Series, we provide up-to-date expertise tailored to current needs in finance for students, professionals, and decision-makers.

Further information: CAS Blockchain and FinTech

Our research addresses current trends and structural changes in the financial sector. We work empirically, experimentally and analytically, bringing together diverse perspectives from business, mathematics, technology and education.

Research Focus Areas:

  • Blockchain Technology & Cryptocurrency Markets
  • FinTech, Digital Finance & Innovative Financial Products
  • Impact Finance & Sustainable Financial Solutions
  • Behavioural & Experimental Finance
  • Mathematical & Empirical Finance
  • Financial Economics
  • Financial Education for Children and Youth

Our research aims to deepen understanding of new financial phenomena and to develop evidence-based recommendations for actors in academia, politics and business.

Further information: Research

Ongoing research projects address questions central to the digital and innovative development of financial markets. A selection of current topics:

  • Liquidity in crypto markets: evidence from intraday data
  • Reactions to technological upgrades of cryptocurrencies
  • Analysis of the effectiveness of financial education in Tanzania
  • Investor behaviour in markets for fractionalised assets
  • Unit of account in crypto markets: do traders think in fiat or crypto?
  • Risk premiums around events and non-convex volatility structures
  • Developments in currencies

Many of our projects arise from international collaborations and are funded by third-party grants or carried out in close cooperation with practice partners.

Further information: Research Projects

Knowledge and technology transfer is a core priority. In collaboration with partners from industry, the public sector, and society, we develop additional projects that complement our focus areas and combine practical relevance with scientific rigour.

Examples of current transfer projects:

  • Development of an app to strengthen financial literacy among children and youth (Erasmus+)
  • Analysis of the location attractiveness of Liechtenstein’s financial centre
  • Virtual & Hybrid Learning Environments (E+ project with Kapsch BusinessCom and the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management)
  • Strategy consulting in the context of blockchain regulation and FinTech innovation
  • Financial education programmes in schools in Tanzania (Erasmus+)

Our projects are often interdisciplinary, international and practice-oriented, aiming to create genuine added value for all involved.

Research Labs

Since 2024, the professorship has been home to the Bank Frick Innovative Finance Lab. The aim of this cooperation is to promote education, professional education and research in the fields of innovative finance, blockchain and FinTech.

The collaboration was initiated jointly with Bank Frick in 2018 and has since linked academic quality with practical relevance. To date, over 120 professional education participants have been trained and more than two dozen academic theses supervised.

The lab regularly offers workshops, certificate courses and research impulses on current developments in digital finance. The Lab’s flagship program is the CAS in Blockchain and FinTech, complemented by the bi-yearly Smart Contracts Workshop.

The Mathematics and Statistics Lab, funded by the Palmary Foundation and led by Dr Wolfgang Schadner, provides support in quantitative methods for students, researchers and cooperation partners.

The lab serves as a point of contact for questions related to empirical analyses, econometric methods, financial mathematical modelling and algorithmic trading. In addition to supervising bachelor’s and master’s theses, it also offers support for independent research and transfer projects.

The lab holds open office hours every Tuesday from 1.00 to 3.00 p.m. (Room C.216) — no appointment necessary.

The Youth Green Finance Initiative links digital financial solutions with sustainable development, especially in the context of young people.

The YGFI Lab, funded by UNICEF Switzerland & Liechtenstein, develops a programme in cooperation with the Liechtenstein Bankers Association (LBV), LLB and LGT Bank, the LIFE Climate Foundation Liechtenstein and other partners, which promotes financial education and entrepreneurial activities for youth, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The project is an example of impact-oriented research that addresses societal challenges and imparts concrete financial skills.

Highlight

A particular highlight is the close integration of research, teaching and practice. Current research findings flow directly into our courses and are tested in practice through projects such as the Bank Frick Lab, the Youth Green Finance Initiative and the Tanzania cooperation.

Through this integration, we succeed not only in academically examining future-relevant financial topics but also in concretely contributing to solving real-world challenges, locally and globally.

Nantes is a beautiful city in the northwest of France, also known as the “Land of the Loire.” It is close to both the ocean and Paris, which means it has the feel of a “small town” (with few tourists), even though both nature and the capital are within easy reach. I’m glad I was able to call Nantes my home for four months. The university is very international and offers a wide range of extracurricular activities and great courses."

I consider my time in South Korea a very valuable experience in my life. I had the opportunity to live in a great country, attend an excellent university and form many international friendships. I look back on this time only with positive memories and would do it again without hesitation. It contributed not only to my academic development in a meaningful way but also greatly enriched my personal growth."

My semester in Rom was a great experience. The city is lively and full of culture. The university had a good range of courses and I was able to learn a lot. I also really enjoyed the food and life in Rome. It was a valuable time in which I met new people and improved my language skills. "

I had an unforgettable time in Japan, where I learned a lot not only academically but also about myself. Tokyo is a huge and fascinating city with so much to offer, from quiet temples to vibrant nightlife. The culture is very different from ours, but very pleasant to experience. I made friends from all over the world and memories, which will stay forever."

I thoroughly enjoyed my semester abroad in Ho Chi Minh City and would highly recommend that everyone take the opportunity to study abroad. It is completely different from Liechtenstein or Vorarlberg in every respect. You learn what it means to immerse yourself in a completely new culture, and I would encourage everyone to embrace this experience in order to get the most out of their time abroad. You meet many new people and gain valuable life experience. I would choose to go to Ho Chi Minh City and Vietnam again without hesitation!"

Partnerships and Networks

Persönlicher Empfang internationaler Studierender

The University of Liechtenstein is a member of a wide range of networks, actively promoting exchange in education, research and administration. The development and implementation of transnational education and research projects in collaboration with international universities and other partner institutions plays a key role in opening up a European and international dimension for students, lecturers and researchers. International project collaborations support the implementation of innovations in teaching and research and contribute to the qualitative advancement of educational programmes and offerings.

Our Partnerships and Programmes

The Network of Universities of Small Countries and Territories (NUSCT) was established to address issues specific to higher education institutions in small countries and territories, which are often only marginally addressed by existing international university associations. NUSCT promotes the exchange of best practices and benchmarking in areas such as governance and education–research partnerships. It also provides a platform for sharing information on funding models and internationalisation. The network supports bilateral and multilateral agreements in research, academic programmes, and the exchange of students and staff. The University of Liechtenstein has been a member since its founding in 2019.

The Cooperation between the University of Liechtenstein (UNILI) and the Faculty of Law at the University of Zurich (RWF UZH) enables students of the MSc in Innovative Finance and MSc in Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Leadership to participate in a structured module exchange. A structured module exchange means that students from the University of Liechtenstein may take modules from a predefined catalogue at the partner institution, provided these or similarly themed modules have not already been completed at the University of Liechtenstein.

This cooperation applies exclusively to students enrolled in the Master's degree programmes in "Innovative Finance" and "Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Leadership".

Further information

Students enrolled in the Master's degree programme in Information Systems at the University of Liechtenstein have the opportunity to complete their second semester of studies as regular students in the Master's programme in Information Systems at Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg. All academic achievements earned in Würzburg are fully recognised by the University of Liechtenstein. At the same time, the coursework completed in Liechtenstein can be credited towards the Information Systems degree at the University of Würzburg. This allows students to obtain two Master’s degrees – one from the University of Liechtenstein and one from the University of Würzburg. Studies at the University of Würzburg are conducted in German.

Further infomation

In the cantons and countries surrounding Lake Constance – in Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland – outstanding scholars conduct research and teach at internationally renowned universities and higher education institutions. Cooperation within the region helps to unlock and expand the educational and continuing education potential of each university and institution. The University of Liechtenstein is a member of this association.

Students of the University of Liechtenstein may take one course or module per semester at one of the partner institutions of the Lake Constance Arts & Sciences Association. They benefit from a vast range of subjects, disciplines and specialised courses.

The new Erasmus+ programme generation was launched in 2021 and will run until 2027.

Further information is available here.

The EEA Financial Mechanism, EEA Grants, aims to reduce economic and social disparities within Europe. Through EEA Grants, the competitiveness of beneficiary countries in Europe is strengthened, while also opening up new trading partners and markets in the medium term for the three EEA countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. Liechtenstein focuses on the programme areas of education and culture. The beneficiary countries include almost all Eastern European countries as well as the Baltic States. As a donor country, Liechtenstein benefits from scholarships for students and staff, and the University of Liechtenstein is a sought-after project partner.

IAESTE – International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience – was founded in 1948 on the principle of fostering international understanding. Today, it includes 60 member countries. IAESTE arranges international internships lasting several months for students from various disciplines around the world. The University of Liechtenstein is part of this global exchange network and an associate member of IAESTE Switzerland. The contact point at the university is the International Office.

EUCEN is a network of around 190 universities in 39 countries, active in the field of university continuing education, which has been developing since 1991. Its main objectives include promoting the initiative of “lifelong learning” and advancing the development of universities into centres for professional continuing education. The University of Liechtenstein has been part of the EUCEN network since 1995.

The new Erasmus+ programme generation was launched in 2021 and will run until 2027. But what are the key focus areas of this programme generation?

Frau hält Erasmus-Plus-Award 2024 der Universität Liechtenstein.

Key Focus Areas

Erasmus+ Digital
This strand focuses on promoting digital skills among students and doctoral candidates. It supports new virtual and blended mobility formats and advances the digitalisation of programme administration – under the umbrella of “Erasmus without Paper”. This includes digital learning agreements and recognition processes, as well as tools such as the Inter-Institutional Manager and nomination systems. In the coming years, the European Student Card is also expected to become the standard.

Erasmus+ Green
As part of the European Green Deal, Erasmus+ promotes sustainable travel options and supports cooperation and projects related to environmental topics. The aim is to raise awareness for sustainability, protect the environment and combat climate change.

Erasmus+ Social Inclusion
This area places a strong emphasis on equal opportunities. It supports underrepresented groups such as socially disadvantaged individuals, persons with special needs, first-generation university students, and working students by offering new mobility opportunities.

Erasmus+ Participation in Democratic Life
Erasmus+ fosters European identity and supports active engagement of citizens and civil society in democratic processes. The programme aims to spark interest in the European Union and enhance understanding of how it works.

2021-2027

Erasmus Charter

By holding the ECHE for 2021–2027, the university commits to meeting the quality standards and obligations of the Erasmus+ programme. The core principles of the current programme generation include:

  • Transparency
  • Inclusion
  • Anti-discrimination strategies
  • Sustainability (Green Erasmus)
  • Digitalisation (Erasmus Without Paper)
  • Automatic mutual recognition

Green Travel

Hand hält mehrere europäische Reisepässe verschiedener Länder.

Erasmus+ aims to raise awareness among scholarship holders and institutions about climate change, environmental protection and especially the ecological footprint generated by mobility. To support this, the programme offers a top-up and the option to count up to 6 travel days when using sustainable modes of transport. Travel allowances for all types of mobility are increased when environmentally friendly travel is chosen.

green erasmus

Inclusion

The current Erasmus+ programm phase aims to promote equal opportunities, inclusion, diversity and fairness across all areas. In the future, there will be a stronger focus on supporting people with disabilities and individuals who belong to the group of “fewer opportunities”.

This group includes students with disabilities or fewer opportunities, students with children, students from non-academic family backgrounds and working students.

Incomings

The University of Liechtenstein has developed into a hub for international students. Located in the former Spoerry factory, the campus offers an ideal environment for learning, research and project work to around 700 students from all over the world. The student body represents more than 60 countries, with a large proportion coming from Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Austria and Germany. This diversity makes the university a multicultural centre for education and research. To foster an intercultural learning and networking environment, we are continuously looking for opportunities to exchange best practices in intercultural collaboration.

From time to time, we organise staff training days for employees of foreign universities and integrate these into our semi-annual welcome weeks for students, which take place in February and September. These weeks include various informational and cultural events such as company visits, dinners, and talks by government representatives about Liechtenstein.

In addition, we aim to expand participants’ professional networks and offer opportunities for hands-on learning through job shadowing with our staff. Participants are also invited to briefly share insights into their own professional backgrounds.

For the University of Liechtenstein, the ERASMUS+ programme represents the most strategically important platform for ensuring internationalisation. As a smaller university, a high degree of internationalisation is essential for maintaining a high-quality academic environment and securing the university’s attractiveness as an educational institution. The expertise gained through various ERASMUS+ project activities, the broad network of contacts and partnerships, the valuable financial resources, and the strong visibility of the established “ERASMUS+ brand” all play a key role in driving forward structural measures that support internationalisation.

By actively participating in ERASMUS+, the university aims to increase student mobility through various formats, to encourage permanent academic staff to take part in ERASMUS teaching mobilities, to support selected key administrative staff through professional development stays abroad, to enhance knowledge exchange and quality through involvement in thematic networks, to initiate new developments via transnational curriculum projects, and to maintain and correctly implement the ECTS and Diploma Supplement systems.

To achieve these goals, the University of Liechtenstein is active in several areas: expanding all mobility measures, improving the conditions for students and academic staff, planning and participating in network projects, and developing innovative curricula within the framework of KA2 projects.

The activities carried out under ERASMUS+ are presented on the university’s website and in its publications, shared internally through information events and social media channels for students and staff, and communicated to the broader public through joint press activities in collaboration with the Agency for International Educational Affairs (AIBA).

The Gender and Diversity Committee works with the Rectorate and other key university stakeholders to develop concepts and measures to ensure gender equality in academic life and employment. The Study Service, the Students Council and the International Office promote social cohesion through joint activities such as international lunches and cultural rotation events.

Riga is a diverse city with a lot to offer. There are plenty of meeting places, cafés and parks. The cultural scene is rich and exciting – especially in contrast to our village-like everyday life. The course content differed from that at the University of Liechtenstein. In addition to the studio, we had classes in drawing and painting, as well as outdoor furniture and regional landscape. All of the courses were manageable, and we completed them with final lectures and presentations of our work."

My semester at the University of Liechtenstein was a great and enriching experience. The fact that the university is small contributed to its personal atmosphere and the close interaction with university staff. The architecture degree programme was enriched by a wide range of content, and in the studio we had access to excellent technical equipment to develop outstanding projects."
