"Be bold and brave. Believe in your dreams. Embrace uncertainty. Always be grateful.” – Barbara Ruech

Barbara Ruech berichtet aus ihrer Zeit in Japan

On Thursday, 18 September, nearly 90 students, staff, alumni and guests from Liechtenstein and the surrounding region braved the glorious sunshine to attend Barbara Ruech’s lecture at the University of Liechtenstein’s Atelier.

After an introduction by architect and lecturer Alberto Alessi, Barbara Lydia Ruech spoke under the title “The Japanese House and its Life as my Master” about her journey through rural Japan. Since 2023, she has been living and working there alongside Japanese craftsmen and architects to restore traditional houses in abandoned mountain villages. She encouraged the mixed-age audience to pursue their dreams.

Barbara Lydia Ruech, alumna of the Master’s programme in Architecture and lecturer at the University of Liechtenstein, combines architecture, photography and storytelling into a distinctive creative form shaped by craft traditions, respect for materials and a love of simple living.

Valuable Exchange

Following the lecture, she answered questions from the inspired audience about her life of deliberate simplicity, marked by unexpected encounters and meaningful collaborations. In a small accompanying exhibition, visitors were able to discover Japanese tools and sketchbooks and take part in a prize draw for authentic Japanese tea.

The evening concluded with lively conversations over Japanese beer, tea and rice crackers in the cosy atmosphere of the Architecture Atelier.

Alumni

As part of the collaboration between the Liechtenstein School of Architecture and Alumni Relations, the University regularly invites alumni to share their experiences and expertise. The next Alumni Talk is scheduled for the end of the semester.

More about Barbara Ruech

Raised in a mountain village in Tyrol as the daughter of a craftsman’s family, Barbara learnt early on the value of precision and the magic of good stories. After training in furniture design and carpentry at the HTL Imst, she studied architecture at the University of Liechtenstein and spent an exchange semester in Bergen (NO). Her time with Peter Zumthor (CH) and renowned firms in Vorarlberg deepened her sense for atmosphere and craftsmanship.

Since 2023, she has been spending much of her time in Japan, immersing herself in traditional crafts and leading her research project “The Japanese House and its Life as my Master”. Today, she commutes between Dornbirn and the Japanese countryside, renovating historic houses, documenting encounters with her camera, and at times living in a small car that serves as both studio and home.

Since 2025, she has co-led the Foundation Studio for Built Heritage & Upcycling at the University of Liechtenstein together with Alberto Alessi. Her work invites us to value what already exists, use resources mindfully, and give space to stories.

Architect and lecturer at the University of Liechtenstein joins international future project “Quartiers de demain” launched by the French government

Oscar Buson, architect and lecturer in practice at the Liechtenstein School of Architecture in the Urban Design & Spatial Development Unit, is participating with his office Raum404 in a major European architecture project: Quartiers de demain. The competition, initiated by French President Macron, aims to explore new approaches to urban development and was officially presented in March 2025 at the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine in Paris.

From 492 national and international submissions, 30 interdisciplinary teams were selected – among them Raum404, led by Oscar Buson, alongside renowned practices such as Studio Gang (USA), Dominique Perrault (FR), and 51N4E (BE), as well as academic partners including ETH Zurich and Harvard University. The project’s objective is to develop forward-looking urban visions supporting the social and ecological transformation of urban districts, with a strong focus on sustainability, quality of life, and participation.

A site with potential: Le Mans, Quartier des Sablons

The Raum404 team is working at one of the ten selected project sites: the Quartier Les Sablons in Le Mans – a representative example of modern urban planning facing social challenges. Together with two other interdisciplinary teams, Raum404 aims to activate existing potentials, demonstrate new pathways for district development, and involve local residents actively in the design process.

The concepts are being refined through an innovative dialogue process, engaging closely with residents, local authorities, and experts. Starting in May 2025, all ten sites launched so-called “Manufakturen” – open workshops for co-creation. A national gathering followed in June in Paris.

“It is an extraordinary opportunity to contribute within this international context – and at the same time to make the University of Liechtenstein visible.”
Oscar Buson

Presentation to the President and exhibition in Paris

The teams’ results were presented to the French government in November 2025 and will be exhibited from December 2025 to March 2026 at the Cité de l’Architecture, Palais du Trocadéro, in Paris.

Implementation of the projects is scheduled to begin in 2026.

The University of Liechtenstein congratulates Sophie Hartl on the successful defense of her dissertation titled “Explaining and Understanding Organizational Dynamics Using Digital Trace Data.”

How do organizations change in the digital age, and how can these processes be made visible? This was the question Sophie Hartl explored in her dissertation under Prof. Dr. Jan vom Brocke at the Department of Information Systems at the University of Liechtenstein. The focus of the work is on the potential of digital trace data—process data from IT systems—for analyzing organizational dynamics.

Based on five scientific studies, Hartl developed structured methodological approaches to identify, interpret, and better understand changes in processes. The research combines computer-based analyses with context-specific, theory-based insights.

The findings provide new insights into how IT-driven changes influence process flows, which contextual factors should be considered in process analysis, and how data-based foundations for decision-making can be created. The work thus makes an important contribution to research in the field of process science and supports organizations in dealing with digital transformation.

The University warmly congratulates Sophie Hartl on the successful defense of her dissertation and thanks her supervisor Prof. Dr. Jan vom Brocke, co-supervisor Prof. Dr. Martin Matzner from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, as well as the chair of the defense committee Prof. Dr. Leo Brecht for their valuable support.

Digital Traces as the Key to Process Design – Outstanding Dissertation by Gregor Kipping

Digital Traces as the Key to Process Design – Outstanding Dissertation by Gregor Kipping

Vier Männer in formeller Kleidung stehen lächelnd auf einer Holztreppe in einem modernen Gebäude.

The University of Liechtenstein warmly congratulates Gregor Kipping on the successful defense of his dissertation, “Advancing Process Science – Leveraging Multiple Sources of Data in Business Process Management”, which was awarded the highest distinction.

How can socio-technical processes be better understood and designed using data in order to address complex challenges in the digital age? This was the focus of Gregor Kipping’s dissertation under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jan vom Brocke at the University of Liechtenstein. The work centers on the contribution of digital data sources to the evidence-based design of socio-technical processes and systems, as well as process-based behavioral visibility, which makes it possible to gain insights into actual workflows from digital traces and use them for management decisions.

Based on ten scientific studies, methodological and conceptual foundations were developed to demonstrate how digital trace data, sensor information, and educational data can be integrated into design processes. As one of the first contributions in the field of information systems, the work takes an explicitly socio-technical perspective on digital credentials. The focus is not only on the technological infrastructure of such credentials but also on their integration into organizational processes, governance structures, and digital learning ecosystems. Through this interdisciplinary approach, the dissertation expands the discourse on lifelong learning processes and the role of digital credentials by adding a design-oriented perspective.

The results provide fresh impetus for the advancement of the interdisciplinary research field of process science and demonstrate how problem-solving can be understood and systematically supported as a dynamic design process. In doing so, the dissertation contributes to the digital transformation of organizations and the development of educational technologies.

The University congratulates Gregor Kipping and expresses its heartfelt thanks to his supervisor Prof. Dr. Jan vom Brocke, co-supervisor Prof. Dr. Axel Winkelmann from the University of Würzburg, as well as Prof. Dr. Leo Brecht as chair of the defense committee, for their tremendous support.
