The Thematic Lab for Mathematics and Statistics (LMS) is a collaboration between the Palmary Foundation and the University of Liechtenstein. The partnership aims specifically to strengthen university teaching in these fields, support young researchers and establish a point of contact available to both students and academic staff for subject-related questions. This is intended to sustainably strengthen the Mathematics and Statistics division at the University of Liechtenstein, which, given the university’s key role for the science location Liechtenstein, is also expected to have a positive impact on the activities of other actors in this field. The thematic lab is hosted by the Professorship for Innovative and Digital Finance and is operationally led by Dr. Wolfgang Schadner.

Programme Overview: Information, Structure and FAQs

The Diploma Programme builds on the content of the Certificate Programme in Fiduciary Services and extends it by a third and fourth semester. Like the Certificate Programme, the Diploma is organised in a modular structure and comprises a total of around 320 contact hours:

  • Advanced Legal Studies – approx. 100 hours
  • Advanced Business Administration – approx. 65 hours
  • Advanced Asset Management and Investment Advisory – approx. 50 hours
  • Advanced Taxation – approx. 45 hours
  • Liechtenstein-Specific Aspects of Fiduciary Services – approx. 60 hours

The Diploma Programme also offers the option, upon request, to attend individual course blocks of the programme as standalone modules, independent of the full degree.

The programme duration is two semesters. Classes generally take place on Monday evenings (17:30–20:45) and Friday afternoons/evenings (13:30–18:30).

Upon successful completion, the University of Liechtenstein awards the degree:

  • "Diplomierte liechtensteinische Treuhand-Expertin" (female)
  • "Diplomierter liechtensteinischer Treuhand-Experte" (male)

The Diploma Programme prepares participants for qualified roles in fiduciary services and provides practice-oriented expertise for management positions in fiduciary companies or for the independent practice of the fiduciary profession.

In combination with the Certificate Programme in Fiduciary Services, the Diploma Programme and its examination level generally serve as preparation for the Liechtenstein fiduciary examination. Admission to the fiduciary examination is governed by Article 3 of the Trustee Examination Ordinance (TrHPV) of 3 December 2013 in conjunction with Article 7 of the Trustee Act (TrHG) of 8 November 2013.

For participants without an academic background, successful completion of both the Certificate and Diploma Programme constitutes proof of qualification within the meaning of Art. 7 lit. b) TrHG.

The examination level of the programmes is therefore aligned with the requirements of the fiduciary examination.

If you do not intend to take the fiduciary examination, please feel free to contact us for personal study advice.

The lecturers from both the University of Liechtenstein and industry are recognised experts in their respective fields. Participants benefit from the knowledge and experience of professors and academic staff as well as representatives from the Liechtenstein National Administration and the Liechtenstein Association of Professional Trustees, members of the Trustee Examination Board, and professionals from fiduciary offices, law firms, consulting companies, banks and insurance providers.

Daniel Erlacher, Graduate

Module Overview

The certificate programme prepares participants for qualified activities in the field of compliance and provides practice-oriented expertise for compliance officers in banks, fiduciary and industrial companies, asset management companies, insurance companies, funds and public institutions.

Specifically, it imparts:

  • Knowledge for practicing as a compliance officer
  • Knowledge of corporate compliance and the interfaces to corporate governance and risk management
  • Knowledge in the field of supervision and regulation, particularly in relation to anti-money laundering and due diligence law
  • Knowledge in the field of data protection and IT compliance
  • Knowledge of compliance-relevant criminal offenses and sanctions
  • Knowledge in the area of tax compliance
  • Knowledge for compliance officers in banking, insurance, the fund business and asset management, industry and fiduciary services

The programme covers compliance topics with consideration of international, European and national legal regulations (LI, CH, AT, DE).

Module 1 – Corporate Compliance I

In the first module of the programme, participants are introduced to the fundamentals of compliance. Key concepts, legal foundations and the historical background are presented. This is followed by a discussion of fundamental compliance issues in the context of corporate culture, ethics and values. Special attention is given to the internal compliance organization, workflows, processes and the interaction with other corporate functions. The module also examines compliance risk assessment and reporting, as well as the strategic role of compliance within an organization.

After a general overview of how to build a compliance organization (requirements for management, organizational setup across compliance areas, etc.), the focus shifts to the practical implementation of directives, including the development of a Code of Conduct based on legal principles. A key aspect here is the distinction between compliance and corporate governance. Building on these topics, the link to internal auditing is established.

The module concludes with an in-depth look at fraud prevention as a core responsibility of the compliance officer, as well as the conduct of internal and external investigations.

Programme Overview: Information, Structure and FAQ

The Certified Compliance Officer programme is designed to run over two semesters and consists of six modules (a total of approx. 200 contact lessons of 45 minutes each).

Modules 1 – 4
Modules 1 to 4 each comprise three or four days of in-person classes at the University of Liechtenstein. In total, eight attendance phases are scheduled for these four modules, each taking place once per month. Each of these modules is completed with a module examination.

Modules 5 and 6
Module 5 is structured as a compulsory elective module and is concluded with a module examination. Participants must complete at least three of the following five submodules: Compliance in Banking, Compliance in Insurance, Compliance in Fund Business and Asset Management, Compliance in Industry and Compliance in Trust Services.

Module 6, which consists of practice-oriented case studies independently prepared in small groups, is organised and conducted in cooperation with VP Bank AG. Unlike the previous modules, this module is concluded with a presentation of the case studies, including a discussion.

Module Overview

Blockchain, cryptocurrencies and FinTechs have been spreading for years, right into everyday life. This programme prepares you for the impact of these disruptive technologies on established business models and value creation networks in the financial sector.

Graduates acquire in five modules solid knowledge and application-oriented skills to help shape the technological redesign of existing financial systems. The knowledge imparted is broad in scope and includes an overview of economic, technological, legal and tax aspects.

Module 1 – Fundamentals of Blockchain

The first module provides an overview of blockchain technology and explains both the basic concepts and its functions with the help of application examples. For example, using the still most prominent application, Bitcoin, it is shown how the proof-of-work approach ensures that manipulations of the Bitcoin blockchain are virtually impossible. At the beginning, an overview of stable coins and CBDC, crypto applications in the monetary system, is also gained.

In the second part of the module, after an introduction to computer science, various types of blockchains, their functioning and consensus mechanisms are extensively discussed, and their respective advantages and disadvantages are presented. The applicability of blockchain technologies in companies, so-called enterprise-grade blockchains, is also discussed.

Educational Objective

The objective of the CAS is to prepare students for qualified roles in the future financial industry. In particular, they acquire a basic understanding of blockchain applications and fintechs. They are able to identify related potentials within their organisation, plan blockchain projects, and communicate effectively with blockchain consultants and technology providers.

Modular Structure

The programme consists of five modules and a final project, and runs over one semester. Each module is taught over three consecutive days and is self-contained.

Liechtenstein Innovative Finance Talks

As part of each module, an evening event is held featuring a keynote presentation followed by a discussion.

Examinations

The content of most modules is assessed through a take-home exam, while one module is assessed through an in-person exam. After the fifth module, a final thesis is also required.

Graduation
